The Simulation Paradox: Duality vs. Non-Duality
Is reality really divided into opposites or are we all part of a unified whole? Can duality and non-duality both exist simultaneously? Let’s dig into this.
Duality is best represented by Yin and Yang, a symbol from the I-Ching (The Book of Changes), one of the cornerstones of Chinese philosophy. At its core, duality means separation exists. For example, the concepts of good/evil, self/others, light/dark.
Non-duality suggests the opposite. Separation does not exist. We are all part of a unified whole and everything is connected.
To go a little deeper, Duality is the way most people experience their lives. The illusion of a separate self. Speaking in terms of simulation theory, duality is what fundamentally gives purpose to the game of life. For instance, the idea of ethics and morality, good versus evil, materialism versus spirituality. These are all drivers and motivators and help individuals form a self-concept. Duality makes narratives possible and helps in achieving soul evolution through contrast. Just like a good film, we need complexity and resistance to inject a sense of purpose and significance.
Zen and other non-dual philosophies emphasize that duality itself is maya—a grand illusion. What we perceive as separation is simply a trick of the mind. The only thing that exists is pure awareness. In this sense, the game of life is a trick of sorts and perhaps the objective is to wake up from this hallucination. In this sense, the core idea is that a player character and an NPC are equally important in creating the whole, they are part of the same consciousness despite appearing to be separate.
All of this said, what if the two could co-exist? What if duality is fundamental to the simulation, the world of the body and senses, yet outside of that, spiritually could be inherently non-dual. Michael Singer likens the self to a drop of water in the ocean. At first, you believe you’re separate, but as you go deeper, you realize you’ve always been the ocean itself. It is also the key to consistent peace, acceptance and fulfillment, something a material-focused existence cannot satisfy.
So what can you do with this information? It’s important to acknowledge that duality is a fundamental part of the material world. Those who take the spiritual path don’t have to renounce the world. Meditation, mantra, detachment from the personal self and the narrative the inner-voice creates are all great tools in breaking free of the illusion we have been conditioned to accept as reality. When you realize that separation is fundamentally an illusion, you still play the game but with a tweak in your perspective.
Duality suggests that we are somehow in control. Many of the wisest people in history, some with the help of psychedelic drugs, have realized that idea is fundamentally flawed. Don Juan Matus in Carlos Castaneda’s books lived his life with controlled folly. That is, the belief that nothing fundamentally matters (non-duality) – life is going to unfold precisely itself (so stop meddling) yet acting like it does matter (duality). Still engage in life (awareness), stay positive and enjoy it but try to detach from outcome dependency. That is, take the seat of awareness (witness consciousness), zoom out of the sensory experience, and give life and reality the space to be what it is – reality.
Controlled folly, the warrior-traveler path, as characterized by Don Juan, takes on a balanced perspective. Taking duality too seriously will result in suffering. At the same time taking non-duality too seriously could lead to passivity, over-detachment and nihilism. The sweet spot is to move through life with awareness (knowing you’re in a simulation/virtual reality), while playing it with mastery (you understand the mechanics of how it works and accept the cards you’re dealt).
In a lucid dream, you know the world isn’t real, yet you explore it with curiosity and joy. Why? Because the experience itself is the point. Life is full of different experiences and provides a platform to evolve deeply on a spiritual level.
